Heroes of the Alamo Monument

Overview

The Heroes of the Alamo Monument was erected by the State of Texas in 1891.

A bronze statue of a Texan holding a muzzle-loader rifle stands atop a Texas Sunset Red Granite base. The granite supports feature the inscribed names of Alamo defenders including James Bowie, Williams B. Travis and David Crockett. The monument pays tribute to those who fought and died at the thirteen-day siege during the Texas Revolution.

As a product of the 1890s, the Heroes of the Alamo includes historical omissions and errors. The Alamo historical site recognizes 189 defenders. The monument includes only 90 from the official list with the correct spelling, 46 misspelled names and 47 other individuals listed but not recognized by The Alamo as having fought at the battle. After consulting with museum and historical professionals, the State Preservation Board determined not to alter the monument and leave it as a historic artifact of the period.
